Embrace the Season – Five Outdoor Winter Activities To Combat the Winter Blues

vermont winter activities

Every winter, the star of the show is the weather. Be it a hero or a villain, the current weather happenings tend to take center stage. Will it be a heavy snow winter? Will temps drop to record lows? Will there be an early frost or a late fall? No matter the outside temps, there is something unique and adventurous to do in Vermont all season long.

5 Unique Outdoor Vermont Winter Adventures to Enjoy This Season

Grab your ice auger (power or manual) and get ready to dip your line in the frigid water for a truly winter angling experience. The largest lake in Vermont, Lake Champlain, has some of the best ice fishing around. From salmon to trout and pike to crappie, you can bring home dinner for days from a single trip. If you’ve never been or need a refresher, you can always hire a registered Vermont Fishing Guide to show you the ropes.

Tether the dogs and be off on a wintertime excursion to be remembered! October Siberians Dog Sledding offers dogsledding packages for individuals or groups. Choose from a downhill tour or opt to amble along the trail in the park, with times ranging from 20 minutes to two hours. To complete your experience, you can ask to participate in gearing up and caring for the dogs before and/or after your tour.

Pro tip: There are no bathrooms at the facility nor is there a shelter so plan accordingly.

Want to jump into something with a little more risk? How about trying your hand (and feet) at Ice Climbing. Similar to rock climbing, you will be challenged to scale up the side of a cliff to the ridge except with ice climbing you use picks and spiked shoes. There is certainly an element of danger and it is always best to go with someone who has experience. The climb to the top may increase your heart rate but it’s typically the view from the top that will ultimately take your breath away.

Snowshoes, that is! Snowshoeing is hiking’s wintertime counterpart.  Don’t let the presence of Jack Frost keep you from your favorite hiking destinations. Many trails are accessible year-round with snowshoes. With the Winter Destination Exploration Package at The Essex Resort and Spa we include complimentary snowshoes. No more excuses – Get out in the woods and explore!

If you want to really get your blood pumping, spend an afternoon zooming around on a snowmobile. Zip through the countryside on a guided trip that is as safe as it is thrilling for the whole family. Be sure to let off the throttle long enough to savor the spectacular winterscape.

Whatever you plan to do this season, be sure to spend time outdoors. It’s good for the whole body, head to toe. At The Essex Resort and Spa, we can help you plan a getaway that has the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and indoor refreshment. Check out our winter packages and choose your next adventure!
