Vermont is one of the most naturally beautiful states in the U.S., and summertime is a fantastic season to enjoy its beauty. Being that the weather is too cold for outdoor sports during much of the year, summertime is a special treat for locals and visitors alike. One of our favorite aspects of summer is playing tennis and this summer, we’re excited to offer a new Backhands & Volleys tennis package with our Director of Tennis, Rob Barr (learn more about that at the end of this post).
The Essex Tennis Program – Interview with Director of Tennis, Rob Barr
During the warmer months, The Essex offers a tennis camp, which combines technique, strategy, shot selection, match psychology, competitive drills, plenty of challenge and lots of fun. We know from the feedback we receive that the tennis program is incredibly popular, and a large part of that is due to Rob’s incredible direction. We recently chatted with him so that we can get to know him and the program a little better. Here’s what he had to say.
Rob, we know that the tennis program is comprised of a few different facets, please share with us which different ways guests able to enjoy and play tennis.
“Our tennis program is primarily centered around the tennis camp, but we offer private and group instruction as well. We have six beautifully maintained clay courts that are available for our guests at no charge.”
We’ve heard that your tennis camp has been recognized as one of the 10 tennis camps in the world, congratulations! Why do you think your camp has been recognized as such?
“I think several factors make our camp great. First, the facilities are first class, and the setting is beautiful. I believe our camp is successful because it’s challenging and good fun-but definitely not a boot camp. It’s a customized program based on the guests’ individual skill sets and requests. We have many guests that return each summer because they have a great time and are amazed at their improvement.”
What are some of your favorite components of the Tennis camps at the Essex?
“I really enjoy the interaction with the guests. Through refining skills and techniques, it’s wonderful to see improvement in their games and new confidence in the way they approach competing.”
What tennis camp preparation tips can you offer to the guests planning on participating in Tennis camp at the Essex?
“No preparation is needed! Come ready for fun and improvement.”
How did you get your start with Tennis?
“I feel fortunate to have been involved with the sport my entire life. I’ve enjoyed coaching the full spectrum of the sport- from new players to professionals on the game’s biggest stages and every level in between.”
Thank you, Rob! It’s been a pleasure chatting with you and getting more familiar with the tennis program at The Essex. Congratulations again for being globally recognized! Undoubtedly this summer will bring both returning guests and new guests to play, have fun, and be guided into their best technique yet!
